RIP David Fernando

I heard from Roly that our boss at a previous company died last Saturday during the height of Typhoon Ondoy. A wall at their home, weakened by floodwater, collapsed on him.

DTF or Sir Dave as he was fondly called, was a certified techie. He was one of my mentors. Mine and of many others. He will be missed.

Retrenchment Galore

The global recession is surely taking its toll. Accenture, Branders, Lawson… everybody’s been hit. This morning, I got to the office and Joyce told me another wave of retrenchments, the third in the company so far, have hit. Needless to say, it is very demoralizing. The first time it happened, they said they’re letting go of people whose skills were no longer aligned with the strategic direction of the company. The second time it happened, they said they’re letting go of people with redundant skills. The sad thing was that it happened just as a project wrapped up and a lot of the people who toiled in the project were let go. That sucked even more since it was just before Christmas. Now the third time, almost everyone not involved in any project were let go. And each time, the severance package becomes less and less consoling. When will this end?

Back To Graveyard Shift

So I started reporting back to the office as per instruction. And what do I learn when I got there? We were to report to the client tonight! Good thing they had the mind to let us go home right after the meeting to prepare. I’m off to sleep after this.

Back To Work

I’m off to work after the holidays. Supposedly it was going to be tonight but I got an SMS from my project manager Lui that due to some contractual issues, we’ll be working daytime at the office until further notice. I stillĀ  feel like vacation. I hope I can haul my lazy ass up early tomorrow.

Graveyard Shift

The company decided to get started with an onsite project on Tuesday. It would have been fine, more or less, except the client is on a 10PM to 7AM work schedule. So we were in normal hour Monday and the next day it was suddenly the graveyard shift. Not benefit of even one weekend to adjust. It was extreme grogginess at around 3AM. And the tonight I had so bad a headache I had to skip work. They could have planned the project start better. This absolutely sucks.
