Appleseed: Ex Machina

I was browsing through my sis’ DVD collection when I saw Appleseed: Ex Machina. At first, I thought it was just the original Appleseed. I got a bit nostalgic and watched parts of it. It didn’t seem familiar and I realized I was looking at a sequel :P As expected, hot warrior chick Deunan Knute is back along with his metal hunk of a boyfriend and the rest of the boys of ESWAT. This time around they’re fighting a mysterious affliction that ravages cyborgs, bioroids, and humans alike turning them into violent sociopaths. If you’re familiar with the original Appleseed (and you should be) then you can expect the same high-intensity anime action sequences, this time it’s powered-up with the presence of John Woo in the production team. I said it with Appleseed and, though the story is less riveting, I’ll say it for Ex Machina: Awesome!!!

Rei Ayanami Is Here!

Joy gave me joyous news today: Rei Ayanami has arrived from the land of the rising sun! After a long long wait she’s finally here! I lost no time and met up with Joy and Lem for lunch and, of course, to pick Rei up. But I didn’t open the box right away. I wanted to document the unboxing. And this morning I finally did.

So what can I say? She’s gorgeous… drop-dead gorgeous. She’s primarily vinyl with some ABS parts. Definitely, designed for mass-production. Molding and paint job is top-notch though. There is no mistaking her for anyone else.
As expected, she’s eminently poseable being equipped with Kaiyodo‘s Revoltech joints. To aid in more life-like poses, she has four spare hands. There’s also a stand for those unstable poses.

Sadly, she only has The Spear of Longinus as an accessory. But then again, if you’re Rei, do you need anything else? Go see the anime if you don’t know what I mean.

All in all she’s great. There are many like her (including Joy’s). But this one is mine and she’s the best :P

Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade

Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade has got to be the better animes, nay, movies I’ve seen. The movie is set in an alternate post-war, post-occupation Japan where the occupiers were the Germans instead of Americans. The German influence can be seen in the vehicles, weapons, and armor of the character. It is the story of a member of an elite police unit who was unable to fire at and thus prevent a girl terrorist from detonating a bomb she was carrying. He wondered why the girl did what she did and sought out more information about her. In the process, she met the girl’s sister. Pretty soon they were caught up in a whirlwind of romance and conspiracy. The artwork is subtle but beautiful, the story deep and compelling, and the ending classic film noir. It puts a lot of Hollywood movies to shame.

Akira

Akira is one of those classic animes. It is noteworthy because it was one of the first ones that featured detailed scenes and fluid-motion. I read about it before but haven’t had the chance to watch it until Bianca lent me her copy.

Akira is about a top secret government experiment gone wrong. A street gang gets tangled in the experiment and one of the gang members, Tetsuo, started manifesting unusual mental powers and destroying things. The gang leader, Kaneda, took it as his responsibility to set out and stop Tetsou. It culminates in an action-packed showdown that shifted towards the metaphysical.

I noticed that such shifts seems to recur in quite a few of the animes I’ve seen. I noticed it first in Robotech, then Evangelion, and now Akira. It somehow reminded me of Stanley Kubrick’s Space 2001: A Space Odyssey.
