Debt Crisis

Despite it’s usefulness in certain cases, a lot of people just can’t seem to handle debt: your friend, your girlfriend, your neighbor, your company, even your country (e.g. Ireland, Portugal, or Greece). But when it’s the US, the largest economy in the world, that is at risk of defaulting on its debt, you take notice.

There’s nothing new in the US being in debt really. However, it has already reached the so-called debt ceiling. More easily understood as a credit card limit for really big spenders. Unfortunately, the government is spending so much that its salary can’t pay for its spending and its credit card bills without having to borrow. Talk about spending beyond your means.

So definitely the government needs to earn more (taxes), spend less (budget cuts),  and if possible, get a credit line increase (debt ceiling). Coming from the recent recession, increasing taxes and decreasing spending to the level that there’s no need to borrow will be counterproductive. Thus, it hinges on borrowing more. All the discussion on the hill is more on how to best address the budget deficit: how to earn more and spend less.

But the ceiling has to be raised. If not, we’re screwed.

Frigid Zone

Less than a month after I had its refrigerant replenished, the Sentra’s aircon is not cooling again. So this morning, I went to Frigid Zone, my favorite car aircon shop. They used to be near, they’re not of the small side-of-the-road variety, they have an air-conditioned waiting area, and they accept credit cards.

After a taking down the components and inspecting them, they confirmed that there’s a leak and it’s in the evaporator. So that had to be replaced. And because of the leak the system was contaminated with air and moisture as there was no positive pressure to keep them out. This means the dryer (it’s really a disposable filter) and the expansion valve (not sure about this having to be replaced) also had to be replaced and the system flushed (i.e. vacuumed out to remove any air and moisture). I ended with the following bill:

  1. Cleaning, flushing, and refrigerant recharge P1300
  2. New evaporator P5000
  3. New expansion valve P1500
  4. New dryer P1200
  5. New fittings P600
  6. New o-rings and valve cap FREE

More expensive than smaller shops. But the parts were new and in good condition and the technicians did their work quickly and neatly. It took around 2 hours but I sure hope the fix lasts more than 2 years. So far it feels good and cold.

Google+ for iPhone

The Google+ iPhone app is out. And I can’t get it. Apparently it is not yet available on the local app store. What? App stores are by country?!? Yup! And it’s not solely for content distribution purposes. The Internet is breaking down international barriers of time and distance (how else can offshoring work so well?) and yet some people (cough*apple*cough) insist on raising artificial barriers. Boo!

Early Bird

Today was the scheduled go live date of a project at work. Since it’s an onshore project, Nino and I were at our respective homes standing by to provide support. Nothing much happened until 1AM when the calls and the emails started coming in. There was a major issue and it didn’t look like phone support will do. So by 4AM, I took a quick shower and drove off the the office. By 5AM I was already at the office resolving the issue. Fortunately, it resolved pretty quick and the rest of the day was comparably less frantic and I was able to leave by 3PM. Whew!
