Buffalo DriveStation

I finally saved up enough cash and justification to get an Buffalo DriveStation. I’ve been planning to get one for a while. While I already have a 1TB Buffalo LinkStation Live which has been more than sufficient for my storage needs, I was a bit jittery with my files stored in only one device.

Before the LinkStation Live, I  had a Buffalo LinkStation Pro but it died on me while still under warranty. After a bit of a struggle, the dealer replaced it with the LinkStation Live because the LinkStation Pro was no longer available.

I got a hardware upgrade, but it was a small consolation for the data lost. Needless to say, I was leery of the LinkStation Live because of the experience. Although it is turning out to be quite reliable so far, at the onset I already resolved to eventually get a backup.

I decided on the DriveStation. It is just a plain vanilla external USB 2.0 hard drive like so may others out there and it performs accordingly. It does have Buffalo’s TurboUSB which supposedly improved transfers but it only works if you first install the TurboUSB software into the host PC. Not really possible in all use cases.

But I picked the DriveStation for one very important reason: It has the same form factor as the LinkStation Live and they fit well together side-by-side on the shelf. What can I say? I’m a sucker for these things.

I attached the DriveStation to the LinkStation Live’s single USB port and I instantly had an additional network share that I can access. But best of all, it can also be the backup destination. So I don’t actually get 2TB of storage, just a little bit over 1TB. But my data is now redundant and I can sleep better at night for it. And how much is that worth?
