Installing A Window-Type Air Conditioner

Summer is upon us and during these hot sweltering nights, air conditioning, which didn’t seem to make sense before all so suddenly does. And of course there’s the baby to consider. If you’re confronted with an irritable baby in the wee hours of the morning, you’ll know what I mean. So we decided to get ourselves a window-type room air conditioner.

Unfortunately, the appliance store won’t install it so we decided to do it ourselves. The Carrier unit we got came with pretty good instructions but there are some things you need to figure out yourself so I thought I’d put them up here and add some helpful notes of my own.

1. Remove the front panel from the air conditioner.

2. Unscrew the locking screw. It is in the lower left or lower right side of the unit.

3. Gently tug and slide the cooling unit from the casing.

4. Position the casing on the window or wall. Make sure it protrudes from the wall far enough to clear the power cable. Once positioned, mount the casing using screws. The casing has mounting holes running along the left and right edges of the bottom and a few along the sides. You can also add L-brackets at the back to support the weight of the air conditioner.

5. Slide the cooling unit back into the now-mounted casing.

6. Screw back in the locking screw.

7. Re-attach the front panel to the casing.

8. If you’re lucky, the frame or window is just the right size for the air conditioner. More often however, there will be gaps on the sides and the top. Cut strips of styrofoam board to fit into these gaps. If you want a really airtight seal, you can use silicone sealant.

That’s it! You now have a well-sealed and insulated air conditioner!
